Certification enablement vs hiring another Claude engineer

Enablement trains your team on your repo. Hiring adds a headcount. Here is how we choose, and why the exams are the syllabus rather than trivia.

Certification enablement is teaching your engineers the same disciplines the Claude exams test, inside your repo. Hiring is adding someone who already has those disciplines. Most teams need both, in that order, unless there is nobody to enable.

Certification Enablement is four weeks. Embedded is the hire-shaped option without a 58-day recruiting cycle.

Enable when ownership exists

You have mid-level engineers who will still be here in a year. They need eval, MCP, and Claude Code conventions, not another vendor platform. We write CLAUDE.md with them. They sit the exams. You keep the IP because it was always in your git.

Hire or embed when ownership does not

A team of generalists "learning Claude on the client's clock" is how pilots die. If there is no named owner, a workshop produces certificates and an unchanged production path. Staff a certified engineer to ship, then enable the people who will inherit.

The exams are the syllabus

Associate is daily use and responsible handling of company data. Developer is API, tools, MCP, caching, agents. Architect is the whole solution and, at Professional, the rollout across teams. That map is why we staff Architect-level review on every engagement, including enablement. See Architect vs Developer staffing.

A four-week track that does not change the repo is a study group. We write eval cases, CLAUDE.md, and at least one gated CI job with your engineers. Then we help schedule Pearson VUE. The certificate without the harness is how you get a line on LinkedIn and the same nine-month demo.

Enablement does not ship the first agent by itself

If there is no production outcome yet, buy a build or embed and run enablement in parallel or right after. Teaching Architect material on a system that does not exist produces people who can talk about eval and still have nothing to eval.

Price for enablement is $12k to $24k over four weeks. It is not a substitute for the $30k build, and it is not cheaper Embedded. Pick it when the people who will inherit are already on payroll and will still be here after the exams.

Questions

What is Claude certification enablement?
A hands-on track that takes your engineers through the Associate, Developer, and Architect disciplines using your repository as the training ground, then helps schedule Pearson VUE exams.
Should we enable our team or hire certified engineers?
Enable if you have engineers who will own the system after a build. Hire or embed if you do not have that owner and a workshop would become theater.
Does enablement replace a production build?
No. Enablement makes your people dangerous in a good way. A six-week build still ships the first production agent if you do not have one.

Architect vs Developer staffing on a Claude engagement

Developer-certified engineers build the tools and agents. Architect-certified engineers decide what must not be built. Here is how we staff both so you do not get a clever system nobody can govern.
