Claude Engineer Interview Scorecard: Verify Skills Beyond Certification

A structured hiring scorecard for verifying Claude engineering capability with credentials, work samples, interview evidence, and production judgment.

The short answer

A Claude certification can establish a useful capability baseline. It should not be the entire hiring decision. Production work also requires repository judgment, safe tool boundaries, evaluation discipline, and the ability to explain tradeoffs under real constraints.

This scorecard gives hiring leaders a repeatable way to assess those capabilities without turning an interview into an exam-prep exercise.

What certification can and cannot establish

Anthropic now describes four role-based certifications for people who deploy Claude for customers. That is useful evidence of a credentialed baseline. It is not evidence that a candidate can operate in your repository, make an appropriate design tradeoff, or hand off a system safely. Treat certification as one input, then seek observable production evidence.

Use the same scorecard for every candidate

Structured interviews improve comparison because each candidate receives the same job-related questions and is evaluated against the same rubric. The United States Office of Personnel Management recommends standardized questions, common rating scales, and benchmarks. Define the role before interviewing: Claude application developer, solution architect, technical lead, or delivery partner.

The six scorecard dimensions

DimensionEvidence to seek
Credential fitWhich certification or learning path maps to the role, and what it does not prove.
Workflow framingA bounded user task, success metric, excluded actions, and named owner.
Tool and data judgmentNarrow permissions, validation, provenance, failure handling, and approval boundaries.
Evaluation practiceRepresentative cases, pass criteria, error analysis, and a change-control plan.
Operational qualityCost, latency, tracing, incident response, and a practical runbook.
Communication and handoffClear tradeoffs, documentation, review habits, and client or team ownership.

Score each dimension from 1 to 5. A 1 is a vague claim or copied pattern. A 3 is a reasonable solution with stated assumptions. A 5 supplies concrete evidence, names failure modes, and makes the owner and control explicit.

Use a production-shaped work sample

Ask candidates to review a small, fictional but realistic Claude workflow. For example: an internal support agent can read approved knowledge-base articles and prepare a response draft, but an employee must approve anything sent externally. Give the candidate a short architecture sketch, two edge cases, and an incomplete evaluation result.

Ask them to identify the highest-risk boundary, name the telemetry they would add, outline three evaluation cases, and explain what would stop release. The work sample should mirror the role. OPM notes that work samples measure tasks that resemble the job and can be assessed through observed behavior or outcomes.

Ask follow-ups that reveal judgment

  • What evidence would make you narrow the scope?
  • Which tool should remain read-only until a review gate exists?
  • How would you find an incorrect action after it happened?
  • What would you put in the runbook before broader rollout?
  • Which part should the next reviewer challenge?

Separate a score from a hiring decision

A scorecard makes disagreement visible. It does not replace references, team fit, legal hiring requirements, or a considered decision. Record evidence and uncertainties beside each score, compare candidates against the same role definition, and define what requires a second reviewer.

From assessment to delivery assurance

Claude Certified Engineers helps teams map role-based capability to production responsibilities, assess a team or candidate, and add delivery assurance where a credential alone is insufficient. The goal is not a decorative badge. It is a defensible decision about who can own the work.
