Context Limits and Memory
What you need to know
A conversation has a finite context window. Long threads degrade, details get lost, and earlier instructions can be diluted. Know when to restart, when to summarise, and when to persist information in a Project or memory instead of relying on the thread.
The window is finite
Everything in a conversation competes for space. In very long threads, early details can fade and instructions get diluted, so answers start to contradict what was said earlier. That pattern is a context problem, not a reason to keep typing into the same chat.
Restart, summarise, persist
- Restart when a conversation has drifted, grown unwieldy, or accumulated contradictory instructions.
- Summarise before restarting: ask Claude for a concise summary of decisions and open items, then edit it and paste it into a fresh chat.
- Persist what repeats. Standing instructions and reference documents belong in a Project, not in each new message.
Worked example
A long working thread starts dropping an agreed audience rule. The user asks for a summary of decisions, open questions, and constraints, corrects one wrong item by hand, starts a new chat with that summary, and moves audience and style rules into a Project. The new chat continues without re-asking settled questions — and the forgotten rule stays available next week.
Exam traps
Keep going in an overlong chat
Summarise and restart; review the summary first so errors do not carry forward.
Treat memory as a replacement for Project knowledge
Keep team-critical reference material in a Project. When accuracy matters, put key facts in front of Claude.
Paste an unread summary into a new chat
A wrong summary becomes the new source of truth. Edit it by hand before you continue.
Assume contradictions mean the model is broken
In a very long thread, suspect context overload before blaming the tier.
Practice scenario
A long chat starts forgetting earlier constraints and begins contradicting decisions made at the start. What is the best first fix?

Manage a Long Conversation: Restart, Summarize, Persist
3.4 · Advanced · ~40 min · claude.ai
What you will practise
- What the context window is and why long chats degrade.
- When to restart a chat and when to carry a summary forward.
- How to persist standing information in a Project or memory instead of the chat.
- How to spot signs that earlier context is being lost.
Complete the Domain 3 exercise and write a short rule for when you restart, what you summarise, and what you persist.
