← Domain 2: Output Evaluation and Validation

2.4 · Lesson 4 of 6

When Human Review Is Required

What you need to know

Some claude.ai outputs should never leave your hands without a person reviewing them. The more external, consequential, or regulated the use, the stronger the need for human review. Claude drafts and assists; accountable people decide.

Stakes decide the review

  • External-facing — customer emails, press statements, public posts
  • Legal, financial, health — real consequences; a qualified person reviews before anyone relies on the content
  • People decisions — hiring, performance, discipline, eligibility
  • Regulated workflows — documented human sign-off may be required even when the draft is excellent

Internal brainstorming and personal drafts carry lower stakes and need lighter review.

Triage buckets

A practical habit for teams: sort outputs into use with a light check, needs review before use, or needs a qualified professional. Ask who will see it, what it decides, and what happens if it is wrong.

Worked example

Eight outputs: an internal brainstorm, a customer email, a contract clause rewrite, a performance review draft, a budget forecast, a meeting recap, a benefits FAQ, and a press statement. Only the brainstorm and meeting recap sit in the light-check bucket. Everything else needs a named reviewer with the source in hand — and the performance, contract, benefits, and forecast items may need a qualified professional depending on policy.

Exam traps

  • A polished draft can skip human review

Stakes decide review, not fluency. External, legal, financial, health, regulated, and people-affecting uses stay human-gated.

  • People decisions can be automated if Claude organises the evidence well

Hiring, performance, discipline, and eligibility need accountable human judgment. Claude informs; people decide.

  • A glance at the draft counts as review

Reviewers need the source material, criteria, and time. Regulated workflows may also require documented sign-off.

  • Treat internal brainstorms and customer emails the same

Personal or internal low-stakes drafts need lighter review. Customer, press, and regulated outputs do not.

Practice scenario

Claude drafts an excellent customer email about a billing change. The draft looks ready to send. What should happen before it goes out?

Triage Outputs: Ship, Check, or Escalate

2.4 · Intermediate · ~30 min · claude.ai

What you will practise

  • Which situations require a human to review the output.
  • Why external-facing, legal, financial, health, and people-decision content needs review.
  • How regulated workflows add review requirements of their own.
  • How to assign a reviewer and a reason, not just "someone".

Use the Domain 2 triage exercise to write a repeatable team rule with named reviewers.
