4.2 · Lesson 2 of 5
Research, Planning, and Process Optimization
What you need to know
Claude is strong at some work and weak at other work. Use it for synthesis, drafting, structuring, and analysis of material you provide. Be cautious where the task needs live data, guaranteed precision, or authoritative decisions.
Strong fit versus weak fit
Strong fit
Summarising, comparing, drafting plans, outlining processes, generating alternatives, cleaning text, turning messy notes into structured deliverables, spotting gaps in a plan you supply.
Weak fit
Exact calculations without checking, facts you cannot verify, information Claude cannot see, final decisions with legal, financial, or personal consequences.
Research and process work
For research, use Claude to widen and organise, then verify the claims that matter. For process optimisation, ask Claude to map current steps, find bottlenecks, and propose changes — then test those suggestions with the people who actually run the process.
Worked example
Ten tasks from a launch process: gathering competitor info (strong), exact payroll total (weak — system owns the number), planning a launch (strong), approving a refund (weak — authority). For each weak item, write the split: Claude drafts or explains; the system or an accountable person finishes. Pick one change to pilot next.
Exam traps
Treat every department task as a strong fit
Fit depends on the task, not the org chart. Exact figures and final authority stay weak.
Ask Claude for exact arithmetic without a system check
Pull the number from the owning system; Claude can explain it after you verify.
Let Claude make final people or legal decisions
Claude informs; a person decides and owns the outcome.
Trust process-map suggestions without talking to the people who run the process
Claude does not see your real constraints. Test suggestions with operators.
Practice scenario
Which task is the strongest fit for Claude on material you can provide?

What you will practise
- Where Claude is a strong fit: research synthesis, planning, drafting, and process analysis.
- Where it is a weak fit: exact calculation, live data it cannot see, and tasks needing authority.
- How to design around a weak spot instead of dropping the task.
- How to propose a better-process idea with Claude's help.
Label ten tasks on the Domain 4 exercise and give each weak-fit item a split of work.
