Output Formats

What you need to know

The shape of an answer matters in claude.ai. Short conversational replies suit inline responses. Standalone documents and reusable pieces suit Artifacts. Comparisons or lists suit tables and structured layouts. Pick the format that fits how the result will be used.

Inline, Artifact, or structure

  • Inline

Quick answers, explanations, and back-and-forth thinking inside the chat.

  • Artifact

Standalone content you will keep, edit, share, or reuse — documents, pages, diagrams, small interactive pieces beside the conversation.

  • Table / list

Tables for comparisons across items and attributes; numbered lists for ordered steps; bullets for parallel points.

Structure helps verification

A table with a source column makes unsupported claims easy to spot. If a format is not working, ask Claude to convert the same content instead of starting over, so the substance stays stable while the layout changes.

Worked example

Three asks: a yes/no policy question (inline), an onboarding checklist you will keep editing (Artifact), and a three-vendor comparison on price, support, and risk (table with fixed columns). Requesting the wrong shape — a long prose vendor write-up — makes scanning and fact-checking harder; converting to a table fixes the use case without rewriting the facts.

Exam traps

  • Put every answer in an Artifact

Short conversational answers belong inline. Artifacts are for standalone, reusable, or heavily iterated deliverables.

  • Compare three vendors in long prose when a table would scan better

Tables suit comparisons across items and attributes. Say the columns you want.

  • Regenerate from scratch when the layout is wrong

Ask Claude to convert the same content into the right format so substance stays stable.

  • Skip format instructions because the model will infer them

State columns, headings, or word limits. Structure also makes unsupported claims easier to spot.

Practice scenario

A finance lead wants a standalone one-page board summary she will edit over several rounds and share. Which format fits best?

What you will practise

  • When a short inline reply is enough.
  • When an Artifact fits: standalone, reusable, or iterated content.
  • When a table or list makes comparisons easier to scan.
  • How to request a specific format in the prompt.

Complete the Domain 2 format exercise and write a one-line rule for inline vs Artifact vs table.
