Ethical Implications

What you need to know

Using AI at work carries ethical duties. Be honest about when AI helped, keep a named person accountable for results, watch for bias, and keep humans in charge of decisions that materially affect people.

Disclosure and accountability

  • Be transparent about AI assistance where it matters to the reader, the customer, or the rules of your field.
  • A person owns every output — the AI is never the answer to who is responsible.
  • Do not present AI-generated content as verified human expertise when it has not been checked.

People decisions and bias

Hiring, promotion, credit, and discipline materially affect lives. Claude can organise inputs; a person decides. Check outputs for bias and unfair framing, especially when describing or evaluating people. Ask who could be harmed by an error and set review accordingly.

Worked example

A screening or performance-feedback workflow: list who is affected, where Claude’s output enters, and risks (bias, over-reliance, missing disclosure, unclear accountability). Write controls — named human decision points, a disclosure choice, and an accountable owner — then sample outputs across different example people for uneven treatment.

Exam traps

  • Claude is accountable for its output

The person using the output is accountable. “The AI said so” is not a defence.

  • Disclosure never matters

Decide deliberately based on audience, context, and policy.

  • Automate hiring, promotion, credit, or discipline end-to-end

Claude can organise inputs; humans must weigh them and own the outcome.

  • Skip bias checks on people-related outputs

Check descriptions and evaluations across examples for stereotyping or unfair framing.

Practice scenario

Claude drafts candidate screening summaries that managers will use in hiring discussions. What is the ethically sound design?

What you will practise

  • When to disclose that AI helped produce something.
  • Why accountability stays with the person, not the tool.
  • Why people decisions such as hiring or discipline need extra care.
  • How bias in inputs can show up in outputs.

Complete the Domain 6 ethics exercise so the workflow has named decision points, disclosure, and an owner.
